Al Jazeera journalist Ismail al-Ghoul was released after 12 hours in Israeli custody following a raid on Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, during which he was severely beaten and detained. The UN condemns the harassment of journalists, and the Committee to Protect Journalists calls it a deliberate attempt to cover up an Israeli assault on the hospital. UN chief Antonio Guterres describes the new report warning of imminent famine in northern Gaza as an “appalling indictment” of the situation. Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7 have resulted in 31,726 Palestinian deaths and 73,792 injuries, while Israel’s revised death toll from Hamas’s attack on October 7 stands at 1,139 with dozens taken captive.
