A new study published by The Lancet estimates that over 64,000 Palestinians were killed in the first eight months of the Israeli war on Gaza, nearly 40% higher than the official toll. The report, based on data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, surveys, and obituaries, estimates that between 55,298 and 78,525 Palestinians died from traumatic injuries between October 2023 and June 2024. The official death tollby June 30 was 37,877, with the study’s best estimate being 64,260, about 3% of Gaza’s pre-war population.
