Middle East crisis: famine ‘imminent’ in northern Gaza, UN report says, as EU foreign policy chief calls area ‘open air graveyard’ – as it happened

The IPC analysis from December 2023 warned of an impending famine in Gaza by May 2024 if hostilities didn’t cease and access for essential supplies wasn’t ensured. Recent evidence confirms that famine is imminent, particularly in northern governorates, with North Gaza and Gaza classified as IPC Phase 5 (famine), affecting around 210,000 people. Ongoing conflict and restricted humanitarian access exacerbate vulnerabilities, surpassing the famine threshold for food insecurity. The entire Gaza population, 2.2 million people, faces acute food insecurity, with half expected to face catastrophic conditions by mid-July. Plan International CEO Rose Caldwell condemned the situation, emphasizing the man-made catastrophe and the violation of international humanitarian law by denying aid access.
