Lavrov warns against US attempts to replace Palestinian state by making it permanent UN member

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov voiced concerns on Saturday that the US and some other countries might propose replacing the establishment of a Palestinian state with a formal declaration of acceptance as a full UN member. Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye, Lavrov suggested that this plan aims to create a “propaganda effect” while maintaining the status quo on the ground, with no unified Palestinian state and most territories occupied by Israel. He criticized Israel’s plans to designate the Gaza Strip as a “buffer zone,” stating that they violate international law. Lavrov emphasized the necessity of establishing a Palestinian state to address violence in the Middle East and urged Palestinian groups to reconcile for effective negotiations with Israel.
