Israel orders new evacuations in Gaza’s last refuge of Rafah as it expands military offensive

Israel ordered new evacuations in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah on Saturday, compelling tens of thousands more people to leave as it prepared to expand its military operation deeper into what is considered Gaza’s last refuge, despite mounting pressure from the United States and other allies. As pro-Palestinian protests against the war persisted, Israel’s military announced its advancement into a devastated area in northern Gaza. Having evacuated the eastern third of Rafah, Israel’s top military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari reported dozens of militants killed in ongoing “targeted operations.” The United Nations cautioned that a full-scale invasion of Rafah would exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and result in a surge of civilian casualties.
