The head of Gaza’s largest hospital, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, has reported being tortured by Israel after his release from more than seven months of detention. Dr. Abu Salmiya, the director of Al Shifa hospital, was among over 50 Palestinian captives released on Monday, as confirmed by an Israeli minister and a medical source in Gaza. During a press conference, Dr. Abu Salmiya stated that he endured “severe torture” while in detention, resulting in a broken thumb. He described the conditions prisoners faced, saying, “Prisoners are subjected to all kinds of torture. Several inmates died in interrogation centers and were deprived of food and medicine.” He also noted that for two months, prisoners received no more than a loaf of bread a day.
