Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad stated on Sunday that Australia has “no right” to divide Jerusalem. Speaking in Bangkok while receiving an honorary doctorate from Rangsit University, Mahathir criticized Australia’s recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. “Jerusalem has always been under Palestine, so why are they taking the initiative to divide Jerusalem, which does not belong to them, but to divide between the Arabs and the Jews. They have no right,” he said. This statement followed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement on Saturday that Australia formally recognizes West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, though it will not immediately move its embassy from Tel Aviv. In October, Morrison had expressed openness to shifting Australia’s embassy from Tel Aviv.
