Activists announce new, bigger aid flotilla to set sail for Gaza in March

Organisers of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla seized by Israel last year say they are preparing a larger mission next month, involving more than 100 boats and up to 1,000 activists.

The Global Sumud Flotilla announced in Johannesburg that the March mission will include medics and war crimes investigators and described it as the largest civilian-led mobilisation challenging Israel’s actions in Gaza. The announcement was made at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Among those backing the initiative is Mandla Mandela, grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, who said the campaign aims to stand for justice and dignity. He was among activists detained during last year’s voyage.

Organisers said the flotilla will also be supported by a land convoy passing through neighbouring

Arab countries, which they expect will draw thousands of supporters.

In October, Israeli forces intercepted around 40 boats from the Global Sumud Flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, arresting more than 450 participants, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and European Parliament member Rima Hassan. Some detainees later alleged mistreatment in custody.
