The severe facial burns of 10-year-old Hanan Akel illustrate the devastating impact of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, causing not only numerous deaths but also horrific injuries affecting both young and old alike. Hanan lay in a hospital bed in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, with difficulty moving her mouth and partly closed eyes. Raw patches on her forehead and stitched scars on her nose and lips were visible.
